February has to be the worst month of the year. The holidays are over, it is still cold and it is a month of generally nothing exciting, but March has brought a little bit of hope. Although it is still below freezing in Toronto, I nonetheless find myself with a renewed will to leave the house.
One of my favourite apps for getting back to running outside is Zen Labs’ Couch to 10K app.
I use this one on the treadmill sometimes too, and I find it is challenging without being overwhelming when you are just getting back into it. Especially when you are just getting back into running on solid ground. Your times get slower and your body gets tired faster, which can be frustrating.
The app is set up to guide you through an interval-based run three times a week for fourteen weeks. If you find your runs are not challenging enough, you can jump ahead. If you don’t feel ready to go any faster, you can repeat a week. This works perfectly for me and my new running buddy, Mia…although I end up having to drag her through the 5-minute cool-down at the end.
If I’m being honest, I should probably jump past the Week 3 Day 2 run that I’m at if I want to break a real sweat, but at this point I just want to get into the routine of getting back out there without dreading it.
